Rick Rescorla: The Unsung Hero of 9/11

On September 11, 2001, as the world watched in horror while the Twin Towers were engulfed in flames, one man took control. With a megaphone in his hand, Rick Rescorla guided hundreds of people down the stairwells. And he sang.

Rick Rescorla was the Chief of Security at Morgan Stanley in the South Tower of the World Trade Center. A former U.S. Army officer and Vietnam War veteran, he was well-known for his uncompromising obsession with safety. For years, he had warned everyone: these towers were easy targets, especially from the air.

Relentlessly, he had organized evacuation drills again and again, earning the nickname “paranoid” from some colleagues. But he didn’t care about the label. He did it for them, because he knew one day it would matter.

And that day came.

At 8:46 a.m., the North Tower was struck. Authorities instructed people to stay put. Rick didn’t wait. Not a second. With a megaphone in one hand and a radio in the other, he took command and began evacuating 2,700 Morgan Stanley employees. Calmly. Authoritatively. With heart.

He sang. Yes, he actually sang. Old military songs, patriotic anthems from his homeland, Cornwall. He sang to keep the group together, to drown out the terror, to inspire courage.

Because of his actions, nearly 2,700 people survived that day.

Rick, however, never made it out himself. After guiding everyone to safety, he went back inside. Witnesses saw him climbing the stairs, one hand on the railing, the other on his heart, looking for anyone left behind.

Minutes later, the South Tower collapsed.

Rick Rescorla died there, a silent hero, just as he had lived his life. He didn’t seek applause. He didn’t want recognition. He just wanted to be ready. And he was.

He saved thousands of lives. And sacrificed his own.

This is his story. And it should be told every time we ask ourselves what true courage really means.

Because there are men who, while the world burns, do not run. They stand. They sing. And they save.
