U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited discussion about his role in the Kosovo–Serbia dialogue, claiming he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for efforts that, according to him, prevented a war in the Balkans.
In an interview with “Fox News,” Trump said:
“If you look at the Serbia–Kosovo case, I stopped a war. I should have received the Nobel Prize for that, and also for India–Pakistan, Rwanda, and Congo. I probably deserve it four or five times.”
Trump also signaled plans to re-engage in the Kosovo–Serbia peace process, criticizing the previous U.S. administration for, as he put it, “destroying the progress that had been made.”
“During my first term, Serbia and Kosovo were close to war. I stopped it. Biden ruined everything with some very stupid decisions—but I will fix it again!” Trump wrote on his platform, “Truth Social.”
On September 4, 2020, a White House-brokered agreement was signed between Kosovo and Serbia for economic normalization. Though symbolically important, the deal had limited impact on the deeper political disputes.
Trump’s remarks suggest that the Kosovo–Serbia issue will remain on Washington’s radar. He is using this case to strengthen his image as a peacemaker and global problem-solver. Still, the conflict remains unresolved, and without a comprehensive political agreement, long-term peace in the region is far from guaranteed.
