Ecuadorian authorities have seized three tons of cocaine in one of the country’s largest drug busts in recent months, with direct links to the Albanian mafia and notorious cartels from Colombia and Mexico.
The cocaine was discovered hidden inside a banana shipment truck at a farm near the port city of Guayaquil, known as a hotspot for drug transit routes heading toward Europe. According to local and international reports, the drugs were packaged with various logos, designed to conceal their origin and destination.
The Ecuadorian military and police forces conducted the raid, which resulted in the arrest of five suspects believed to be part of a wider international narcotics network orchestrated by Albanian criminal groups operating in South America.
The Ministry of Defense of Ecuador labeled the operation as a “major blow to the Albanian mafia”, highlighting the strategic nature of the seizure and the impact it will have on transnational criminal activity.
Authorities estimate the street value of the seized cocaine at approximately $90 million, underscoring the scale of the operation and the financial damage inflicted on the network.
This raid reveals the deep integration of the Albanian mafia within global drug trafficking chains, particularly in Latin America. By collaborating with powerful cartels and managing logistics in countries like Ecuador, Albanian criminal groups demonstrate not only ambition but also dangerous international reach.
