World’s First mRNA Lung Cancer Vaccine Enters Human Trials

A New Hope in the Fight Against Lung Cancer: First-of-Its-Kind Vaccine in Human Trials

In a groundbreaking move that could reshape cancer treatment, doctors have begun testing the world’s first mRNA-based lung cancer vaccine in human trials across seven countries.

The vaccine, named BNT116, is developed by BioNTech—the same biotech firm behind one of the leading COVID-19 vaccines. This new therapy specifically targets non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which is the most common and deadliest type of lung cancer globally.

Using cutting-edge mRNA technology, the vaccine teaches the immune system to detect and destroy cancer cells, all while preserving healthy tissue. One of the first participants in the trial is 67-year-old Janusz Racz from London, who began treatment at University College London Hospitals.

The Phase 1 trial will enroll around 130 patients worldwide, including 20 in the UK. Participants will receive weekly doses of the vaccine, followed by ongoing maintenance shots, in combination with immunotherapy to maximize the immune response.

Researchers are hopeful that this pioneering approach will not only treat tumors but also prevent cancer from returning—a crucial challenge in current lung cancer therapies.

If the trials succeed, BNT116 could usher in a new era of personalized cancer care, transforming outcomes for millions of patients around the world
