A former CIA analyst has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for unlawfully retaining and transmitting classified information related to Israel’s military plans against Iran, in a case that has sparked serious concerns about national security breaches.
Asif William Rahman, 34, pleaded guilty in January
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Asif William Rahman, aged 34, admitted guilt earlier this year to two counts under the Espionage Act, including the deliberate retention and transmission of national defense information.
While holding a high-level security clearance, Rahman allegedly printed, photographed, and transmitted highly classified documents, some of which were later disseminated on social media platforms, raising alarms across international intelligence networks.
Leaked documents exposed sensitive military intelligence
Among the leaked materials were documents marked “Top Secret”, reportedly accessible to the Five Eyes intelligence alliance—comprising the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The documents included U.S. assessments of Israel’s strategic military positioning, including planned airstrikes against Iranian targets and movements of military assets.
Some documents even referenced Israel’s nuclear capabilities—a subject the Israeli government has never officially confirmed or denied.
In October 2024, the classified files began circulating on a Telegram channel linked to Iranian sources, sparking speculation about foreign involvement or influence.
Israeli airstrikes followed weeks later
Subsequent to the leaks, Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military installations, reportedly in retaliation for missile attacks initiated by Tehran weeks prior. Analysts believe the leaked intelligence may have accelerated or influenced these military decisions.
U.S. officials condemn breach of trust
John Eisenberg, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, commented:
“For months, the defendant betrayed the American people and the oath he swore by revealing some of our nation’s most closely held secrets.”
Former President Joe Biden described the breach as “deeply concerning,” signaling the administration’s serious stance on protecting intelligence assets.
Rahman arrested abroad and extradited
Rahman, who had been working overseas, was arrested by the FBI in Cambodia and later transferred to Guam, a U.S. territory, to face federal charges.
