Trump Ends Sanctions on Syria: A New Era of Reconstruction Begins

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a landmark executive order officially ending the long-standing sanctions program against Syria. Announced on Monday, this move effectively lifts Syria’s isolation from the global financial system and signals Washington’s renewed commitment to support the country’s post-war reconstruction efforts.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that while general sanctions on the Syrian state are lifted, targeted sanctions will remain in place. These include restrictions against former president Bashar al-Assad, his close associates, human rights abusers, narcotics traffickers, individuals tied to chemical weapons activity, ISIS and affiliated terror groups, as well as Iranian-backed organizations.

The decision was met with optimism by Syrian officials. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani called it a “long-awaited door opener” for Syria’s recovery and reintegration into the international community. He noted that it would “remove a key obstacle to economic recovery.”

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met with Trump in Riyadh this past May, where the American leader unexpectedly announced his intention to lift sanctions – a major shift in U.S. foreign policy toward the Middle East.

“Syria deserves a chance, and that’s exactly what happened,” said Thomas Barrack, the U.S. special envoy for Syria, in a statement to reporters.

Trump’s decision reflects a dramatic strategic pivot in U.S. policy. While previous administrations emphasized isolation and pressure, this move underlines a shift toward re-engagement and reconstruction. In the broader geopolitical context, it could significantly affect the power dynamics in the Middle East, reshape U.S.-Iran relations, and redefine American influence in regional affairs.
