Greece Halts Work Due to Scorching Temperatures Over 40°C

Greek authorities have ordered work stoppages in several sectors as the country faces an extreme heatwave with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C in many areas. The soaring heat poses a serious health risk for workers and citizens alike.

According to official statements, mandatory work breaks mainly apply to outdoor professions directly exposed to the sun, such as construction, city cleaning, and certain public services. For critical sectors that cannot fully suspend operations, reduced working hours and additional safety measures will be enforced.

Greece frequently experiences heatwaves during summer, but authorities warn that this week’s temperatures are among the highest recorded in recent decades. Health institutions have urged citizens to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay well hydrated, and take special care of the elderly and children
