Washington / Ottawa –
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark and unprecedented warning to Canada, threatening 100% punitive tariffs if Ottawa proceeds with a trade agreement with China. The explosive statement was made on Saturday through Trump’s platform, Truth Social, directly targeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Trump described any potential Canada–China trade deal as a serious national risk, claiming that Beijing would “completely swallow Canada” economically and socially.
“If Canada signs a trade deal with China, the United States will immediately impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods entering the U.S. market,” Trump wrote.
“China Will Use Canada as a Back Door”
According to Trump, China’s strategy is clear: using Canada as an alternative route to bypass American tariffs and flood the U.S. market with Chinese products. He warned that Washington will not allow Canada to become a “dumping port” for Chinese goods.
Trump emphasized that any attempt to undermine U.S. trade defenses would be met with swift and severe economic retaliation.
“This will fail. Completely,” Trump added. “The United States will defend its economy.”
Escalating Tensions Between Two Historic Allies
Trump’s comments come shortly after statements by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who during a visit to China described Beijing as a “reliable and predictable partner.” At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Carney also encouraged European leaders to seek deeper investment ties with China — a move that appears to have infuriated Trump.
As tensions escalate, Trump has reportedly withdrawn an invitation for Canada to join his proposed Peace Board Initiative, aimed at global conflict resolution. This decision followed Carney’s criticism of economic integration and tariffs being used as political pressure tools by major powers.
Trade, Power, and a Growing Rift
The latest developments signal a sharp deterioration in U.S.–Canada relations, placing trade, geopolitics, and economic sovereignty at the center of a growing conflict. Analysts warn that if such tariffs were implemented, the consequences for Canada’s export-driven economy could be severe, especially given its deep reliance on the U.S. market.
While no official response has yet been issued by the Canadian government, the warning has already sent shockwaves through political and economic circles.
One thing is clear:
If Canada moves closer to China, Trump is ready to respond without compromise.
