National Guard Temporarily Detained Civilians During LA Protests, Commander Confirms

LOS ANGELES — Tensions in California’s largest city continue to simmer after it was officially confirmed that National Guard troops temporarily detained civilians during recent protests against immigration raids.

Major General Scott Sherman, commander of Task Force 51 overseeing the deployment, stated that the detentions occurred during the early days of unrest but were short-lived. “Our troops are not making arrests,” Sherman clarified. “They only intervene to stabilize the situation until law enforcement officers can take control.”

Over 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines have been deployed across Los Angeles in response to the protests sparked by federal immigration enforcement operations. So far, around 500 Guard members have received specialized training to accompany immigration agents, including legal briefings and riot control exercises.

Though the situation has calmed somewhat in recent days, Sherman warned that tensions could rise again. “We’re expecting things to escalate,” he said. “My focus is here in LA, but similar actions are being discussed across the country.”

Local officials, including California’s governor and LA’s mayor, have expressed concern over the military presence, warning it could infringe on civil liberties and escalate conflict. Meanwhile, a federal court is preparing to review the legality of the National Guard’s involvement in operations typically reserved for civilian law enforcement.

While most protests in LA have remained peaceful, some have led to confrontations and over 400 arrests, primarily for curfew violations and failing to disperse when ordered.

As the situation evolves, activists and civil rights groups are raising alarms about the broader implications for free speech, due process, and the militarization of protest response in American cities.
