Emergency in Mount Korab: Local Resident and German Tourist Poisoned by Toxic Plant, Rescued by Air Evacuation

A serious incident, which fortunately did not turn fatal, occurred today, July 7th, 2025, in the mountains of Korab, Albania. A local Albanian resident and a German tourist accidentally consumed a poisonous plant, putting their lives in serious danger.

According to an official announcement by the Albanian National Mountain and Hill Search and Rescue Service (ShKShMK), they received an urgent call and crucial information regarding this incident. The two individuals were enjoying a rest in the wild when they mistakenly ate a plant which was later identified as highly toxic. Within a very short time, their health deteriorated drastically.

Luckily, one of the tourists remained conscious and had mobile network coverage, allowing him to immediately contact ShKShMK and share their exact GPS coordinates. This quick action enabled the rescue teams to react without delay.

Two members of ShKShMK, who were carrying out routine patrol activities nearby, instantly responded and headed directly to the given location. They provided the first aid to both victims and kept them under constant observation while coordinating further evacuation measures.

Due to the victims’ severe and critical condition, the authorities decided that an air evacuation was necessary. Without wasting time, the Albanian emergency services deployed an air unit, along with medical staff and rescue personnel, who arrived at the scene in record time.

After providing urgent on-site medical procedures, both patients were airlifted by helicopter to the University Hospital Center in Tirana for further treatment. Thanks to the precise coordination and the professionalism of everyone involved, their lives were saved in the most critical moments.

ShKShMK publicly expressed gratitude to all individuals and institutions who contributed to this complex and urgent rescue operation. They also wished both patients a swift and full recovery.

This incident is a stark reminder of the importance of being well-informed about local flora and the potential risks of wild plants during mountain hikes. It also underlines the necessity of always having emergency contacts ready when venturing into remote natural areas.
