One day, the Sultan called his vizier and asked a puzzling question:
— “How is it that my servant is happier than I am, when I lack nothing and he owns almost nothing? I have wealth, land, power—and yet I feel empty.”
The vizier smiled and said:
— “Your Majesty, apply the Rule of 99.”
— “What is that?” — asked the Sultan.
— “Place 99 gold coins in a bag and leave it at your servant’s doorstep at night. Add a note that reads: ‘A gift of 100 gold coins.’ Then watch what happens…”
The Sultan followed the advice. That night, the servant found the bag, looked around suspiciously, and quickly took it inside. Overwhelmed with joy, he began to count the coins.
But there were only 99.
Confused and obsessed, he and his family searched everywhere for the missing coin. They turned the streets, corners, and stones upside down in desperation.
The joy of receiving a treasure faded into frustration.
He began snapping at his children. He even grew aggressive with them, blaming them for not finding the missing coin.
The next day, the servant stood before the Sultan—exhausted, angry, sleepless, and broken in spirit.
And the Sultan finally understood…
The Rule of 99 was clear: when you chase what’s missing, you forget the blessings you already have.
Message to the Reader:
How often do we fall into this trap?
We forget the 99 blessings that Allah has given us and chase the one thing we think will complete us. That’s how we lose our peace, joy, and gratitude.
