Washington, June 27, 2025 – In a historic and highly divisive decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has significantly curtailed the authority of lower federal courts to issue nationwide injunctions against presidential actions—handing President Donald Trump a major legal victory.
The ruling comes in response to court orders from federal judges in Washington, Maryland, and Massachusetts that sought to block Trump’s initiative to limit birthright citizenship for certain immigrant groups. According to the U.S. Constitution, anyone born on American soil is granted citizenship, but the Trump administration has argued that this should not apply to undocumented immigrants or temporary visa holders.

While the decision does not give Trump total authority, it allows him to implement executive orders unless specifically challenged in individual lawsuits—weakening the ability of lower courts to halt presidential actions nationwide.
The three liberal justices issued a sharp dissent, warning that this sets a dangerous precedent, empowering the executive branch beyond constitutional limits.
For Trump, this ruling clears the way to reassert control over controversial immigration policies, many of which had been stalled by judicial intervention since the beginning of his presidency.
