Washington, June 27, 2025 – In a historic and highly divisive decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has significantly curtailed the authority of lower federal courts to issue nationwide injunctions against presidential actions—handing President Donald Trump a major legal victory.
The ruling comes in response to court orders from federal judges in Washington, Maryland, and Massachusetts that sought to block Trump’s initiative to limit birthright citizenship for certain immigrant groups. According to the U.S. Constitution, anyone born on American soil is granted citizenship, but the Trump administration has argued that this should not apply to undocumented immigrants or temporary visa holders.
The Supreme Court’s conservative majority, led by Justice Amy Coney Barrett—appointed by Trump—found that such broad injunctions may exceed the power granted to lower courts by Congress.
“Nationwide injunctions likely overstep the judicial authority given to federal courts. The Court grants the Government’s request for partial suspension of these injunctions,” the majority opinion reads. It further clarifies that the suspension only applies when injunctions extend beyond the individual plaintiffs involved.
While the decision does not give Trump total authority, it allows him to implement executive orders unless specifically challenged in individual lawsuits—weakening the ability of lower courts to halt presidential actions nationwide.
The three liberal justices issued a sharp dissent, warning that this sets a dangerous precedent, empowering the executive branch beyond constitutional limits.
For Trump, this ruling clears the way to reassert control over controversial immigration policies, many of which had been stalled by judicial intervention since the beginning of his presidency.

This Supreme Court decision represents a turning point in the legal dynamics between the executive and judicial branches. By limiting nationwide injunctions, the Court is effectively shielding presidential power from sweeping judicial interference. It reflects a broader ideological trend favoring strong executive authority, particularly in areas like immigration and national security. For President Trump, this sets the legal stage for more assertive governance, with fewer obstacles from the judiciary. The long-term implications, however, could reshape how future administrations assert—and are restrained in—their use of power.
