A shocking incident at Orio al Serio Airport in Bergamo, Italy, has claimed the life of a man who was fatally sucked into the engine of a Volotea aircraft. The event took place Tuesday morning, temporarily halting air traffic and causing several flight diversions.
Italian media report that the victim was neither an airport employee nor a passenger, but a civilian who seemingly breached airport security and accessed the runway. Witnesses say the man ran toward an Airbus A319 preparing for takeoff to Asturias, Spain. Despite police pursuit, officers were unable to intercept him before the tragic moment.
Authorities suspect the man may have entered the area intentionally to commit suicide, though his motives remain unknown. It is still unclear how he managed to enter a high-security zone, raising serious concerns about the airport’s safety protocols.
The aircraft had just left the boarding area when the incident occurred. As a result, several inbound flights were redirected to airports in Milan (Malpensa), Verona, and Bologna. Operations resumed at Orio al Serio around midday.

Security Breach or Institutional Failure?
This tragedy raises urgent questions about airport safety measures across Europe. The fact that a civilian could access the runway and get so close to an active aircraft without being stopped indicates a critical failure in the airport’s security system. If confirmed as a deliberate suicide, the case also highlights the need for greater mental health support and intervention. But the core issue remains: how did such a massive security lapse happen at one of Italy’s busiest airports?
