WhatsApp Introduces a Major Update – Soon You’ll Be Able to Chat Without Sharing Your Phone Number
WhatsApp is rolling out one of its biggest updates in years, introducing a new feature that will allow users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers.
The platform is launching unique usernames, giving users a new way to connect while improving privacy and security.
How Will It Work?
Starting Monday, users will be able to reserve a unique username directly within the app. The feature will be optional, meaning users can continue using WhatsApp as before or choose to create a username.
Once the rollout is complete, people will be able to start conversations simply by exchanging usernames instead of phone numbers. Users will also have the freedom to change or remove their usernames at any time.
A Major Privacy Upgrade
According to WhatsApp, usernames are designed to offer greater privacy, especially when communicating with people who are not already saved in your contacts.
The platform will continue to provide its existing safety tools, including options to block and report unwanted messages or suspicious accounts.
Username Rules
Usernames can contain up to 35 characters and must be unique. Certain names associated with high-profile public figures, celebrities, and officials will be restricted to prevent impersonation and abuse.
The feature is expected to roll out gradually to more than three billion WhatsApp users worldwide over the coming months, making it one of the app’s most significant privacy-focused updates to date.
