Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that Iran is involved in ongoing negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
“Gaza is now at the center of a major negotiation between us, Hamas, and Israel. Iran is actually involved as well, and we’ll see what happens with Gaza. We want to get the hostages back,” Trump told reporters during an event in the State Dining Room at the White House.
He did not provide further details regarding Iran’s role in the talks. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for clarification, and Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York also declined to comment.
The United States has proposed a 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. While Israel has expressed its willingness to accept the terms, Hamas has so far rejected the plan.
According to the U.S. proposal, 28 Israeli hostages—both alive and deceased—would be released during the first week of the ceasefire in exchange for the release of 1,236 Palestinian prisoners and the return of the remains of 180 deceased Palestinians.
In addition to the Gaza-related talks, both the United States and Iran are reportedly engaged in separate negotiations concerning Tehran’s nuclear program.
